Traditional Chinese Music Alive in BiH

On the evening of 6 August 2018, the Chinese Bamboo Flute

Orchestra held a performance at the Bosnian Culture Centre in Sarajevo for an audience of over 600 people. The Orchestra brought to the Bosnian people traditional oriental music played by the flute and Xiao (a similar musical instrument made of a hollow bamboo stick), rearranged in the form of flute ensemble. Music pieces like Joyful Reunion, showing how happy the Chinese are when having family gathering together for traditional holiday; Bamboo Phrases, depicting the beauty of a vast bamboo forest; Song of Yangguan, telling the sadness and good wishes when bidding farewell to a good friend about to take a long journey away from home; Three Scenes of the Treasure Island, bringing to life the amazing scenes and hard-working people in China’s Taiwan Island, were all so unique and fascinating to the Bosnian people.

The audience were reluctant to leave after the performance. They all said that they enjoyed it to the full, a joy both to ears and eyes. One man told Professor Zhang Weiliang, Director of the Orchestra, “ Your music is the voice of nature. You have best combined the traditional Chinese music with modern developments.” The orchestra, composed of young musicians in China, opened up a whole new world of Chinese traditional art and culture to the Bosnian people. In the Year of 2019, there will be more to expect from this ancient oriental civilization, like performance by Inner Mongolian artists, a Chinese Ink Painting Exhibition, and Peony Garden, traditional Qunqu Opera.
