What is Shanghai?

What is Shanghai?

Lamp posts by the cafes on FuXing Road
where sprinkles fell along with the phoenix leaves covering
the pavements that some playful children just fly by
The grandparents inside the alleys
Sitting on bamboo branches fanning themselves
Glaring at the steam from the pots climbing to the ceiling
through the windows and wide open doors
The photographs at the art exhibitions in halls
Chattering, commenting on the exquisite forms of arts
The conductor in Concert Hall
Equipping the assembly for the Strauss new year concert

This is Shanghai ——
It subtly merges the charm of contemporary architecture and pace
With the relic of French concession and Buddhist temples
It inevitably combines the foreign ambitions of the past
With the local voices still clamoring in Shanghainese here and there
And now for a life that is full and fulfilling

This is Shanghai ——
It serves you pasta and borscht soup when you stroll on Avenue Joffre
Sometimes stuffs you with fried dumplings and spareribs with sticky rice
It presents you with the lavish neon lights by the Bund
Yet sometimes calms you down with a sip of barley tea with rose pastry
Then you wander across the bridge with hundreds of pedestrians
From here and beyond
Lost in the crowd but found in paralleled affection for this city
This is Shanghai.
